All Nut Rolls are not Created Equal!
Most define Potica (pronounced pah-TEET-zah) as a Slovenian nut roll. Well, that just does not describe it at all. I have created this site to spread the truth about Potica. This is not your average holiday nut roll, it is nut roll with more nuts than roll. A mere nut roll is a Potica on a diet. Folks, if you have not tasted Potica you have been missing out on one of life's greatest eating pleasures. Take a look around and you will see why Potica is the tastiest nut roll ever.

Growing Up With Potica
One of my fondest holiday food memories is of my grandmother's Potica. It was amazing. When she would serve it, she would ask "...do you like it better with or without raisins?" I would answer "I'm not sure. I better take a piece of both." She would laugh and give me both. It was funny but it was also the truth. I hate raisins but raisins in Potica are magical. My Grandmother eventually passed on and the Potica tradition passed with her. I am not much of a baker so I have begun a search for my beloved Potica.I started my search at local bakeries. When I ask if they sell Potica, they look at me like I am speaking a foreign language. They have no idea what I am even talking about. When I search online I find the same reviews everywhere. People who grew up with Potica find it for sale online, try it out and then they comment that it is not the same. I have decide that I am going to begin a quest for the perfect Potica. I am going to begin ordering Potica for the holidays. I will update this site with our Potica reviews. When I find one similar or hopefully the same as my grandmothers I will announce it here.

All Poticas are Nut Rolls but All Nut Rolls are NOT Poticas.
A "Nut Roll" is a Potica on a diet.
Well, I think the problem is everyone who grew up with Potica thinks a nut roll is Potica. I know this because every Christmas my father and I have this argument. He asks if he should bring a nut roll and I say, please bring Potica. Then he tells me that this nut roll is Potica. He must not have a very good memory because you can call Potica a nut roll but you can NOT call an ordinary nut roll a Potica. One Christmas I received a catalog that sold Potica. It was too late to order so we passed it around the table and told Potica stories. This is a sad but very true story. If you have ever had a REAL Potica you will know why we have this Potica problem. I have never heard of love like this for an ordinary nut roll.

So You Wanna Make Potica
I have never made Potica myself. However, I do know for one to make Potica a heavy duty mixer is needed and if you are not into self torture then you will also need a nut grinder. I remember my grandmother being one of the first people I knew to have a self standing mixer with a bowl. My grandmother and her mixer were the finest making Potica team in North America.Vintage Mixer Art Print

KitchenAid Professional 5 Plus Stand Mixer - Chrome
KitchenAid Professional 5 Plus Stand Mixer - Chrome
Amazon Price: $319.99 (as of 03/17/2010)![]()
The Professional 5 Plus has a powerful 450-watt motor that delivers enough power to handle the heaviest mixtures, and mixes large batches easily. This special bowl lift model has brackets on the bowl that fit over support pins on the stand mixer, which is than lifted up by a handle on the right side of the mixer to lock the bowl in place while mixing (this design is made to handle heavy mixtures and large recipes). The 5-quart polished stainless steel bowl is dishwasher safe. Its ergonomically designed handle is contoured to fit the hand and makes lifting the bowl more comfortable. This mixer also features a unique mixing action: the beater spins clockwise as the shaft spins counter clockwise, moving the beater to 67 different points around the bowl. This distinctive mixing action creates a thorough blend of ingredients and eliminates the need to rotate the bowl. 10 speeds allow the user to select the right speed for the mixing job, from very high to a very slow stir. The flat beater, dough hook, and professional wire whip add to the versatility of the mixer. In addition, the Soft Start mixing feature helps prevent ingredient splash-out and "flour puff" at startup, while "Overload Reset" helps eliminate overheating of the motor. A hinged hub cover flips up, allowing easy installation of attachments and never leaves the mixer. Optional attachments (sold separately) complete the package to make cooking a pleasure. From citrus juicer to sausage stuffer, KitchenAid stand mixers can handle just about any job in the kitchen.

Cuisinart SG-10 Electric Spice-and-Nut Grinder
Amazon Price: $28.94 (as of 03/17/2010)![]()
Equipped with a heavy-duty motor and specially designed stainless-steel blades, this electric grinder quickly and efficiently grinds spices and nuts. A pestle and mortar offers one way to turn thyme into powder, but sometimes it's nice just to get the job done without all the pounding and manual grinding. Simply add the spice to be ground--anything from peppercorns or cloves to flax, fennel, or mustard seeds--close the lid, and press down to start the grinding process. Or add walnuts, pecans, peanuts, or almonds and grind just the right amount of time for the perfect consistency and add to cookies, sweet breads, and other baked goods. The grinder's bowl holds up to 90 grams, and its storage lid allows for extra spices to be stored in the grinding bowl. Other highlights include nonslip rubber feet, a built-in safety interlock that prevents operation unless the lid's securely in place, and a sleek design that will nicely compliment any kitchen decor. For added convenience, the lid and removable stainless-steel bowl clean up easily by hand or in the dishwasher. An instruction manual with recipes comes included. The grinder measures 5 by 6 by 9 inches and carries an 18-month limited warranty.

- I have been making my Potica for 30 years (I am 45 - so I think that should answer a few questions). I made my first batch on my own when I was 22. Our family has tweeked the my great-grandmothers recipe until we found what we like. For the past 6 years I have been working on a creamcheese/cranberry/almond recipe that I feel I have finally perfected.
I have tried Strawberry Hill - but again, as good as it was - not as good as homemade.

- Is this polish? My stepfather who was also from the Pittsburg area but actually it was New Kensington, I think was the name and he was polish. His mom made the best homemade polish food such as perogies and these thin crunchy cookies that I used to help make when I went to her house. I forget what they were called, but they seemed like a thin blintz as a cruchy flat sort of large cookie.
